- I've been trying to find one school for all three of my children, one of whom has autism spectrum disorder. The other two have tried two English schools, followed by a French speaking school with huge problems of social integration (they speak 5 languages and are of Armenian origin, which made one of my daughter's classmates tell her that her country was a place where dead people live and other rather biased comments from other children, plus her one teacher who called her "too different"). My son with autism, on the other hand has had a wonderful experince at a Flemish special needs school. He does qualify to be in a "normal" school, though.. My question is "Is there one good, preerably Flemish, school that can accomodate to the needs of all three of my children"? Separating them into different schools has had a negative impact on our life as a family. Anna Abrahamian Dear Anna Many thanks for your question. I do sympathize with your situation and have met a number of families in the same position. I know that at the International School of Brussels (ISB), we have made it our firm commitment to try to serve the educational needs of every child in the families that come to our school (Hence our mission: 'Everyone included, everyone challenged, everyone successful'). This has resulted in a very well developed learning support centre in the school, offering specialist support to students with a wide range of moderate to intensive learning needs - both inside and outside the classroom. However, for local Belgian families, this is certainly an expensive option and I know that local resources are spread much more thinly. The only contact I have that might be able to assist you would be Le Chat Botté in Brabant Wallon (www.centrechatbotte.be). They would almost certainly be able to let you know if there was a facility in Belgium that suited your particular needs. I wish you well in your search.
